Canelo Alvarez has ruled out a catchweight fight with welterweight Terence Crawford, insisting that a face-off must happen at 168 lbs, not the proposed 158 lbs. This is seen as Canelo’s attempt to avoid granting undue advantages. The boxing community has voiced concerns about Canelo’s choice of opponents, with some suggesting a fight against Crawford would be opportunistic, especially after his bout against 154-lb champ Jermell Charlo.

Despite Crawford’s success, particularly his recent win over Errol Spence Jr., Canelo believes that a victory over Crawford, who is untested at 168 lbs, might not carry much weight in terms of accolades. However, Crawford feels he’s earned his place amongst top names such as Canelo and Gervonta Davis.

Most boxing enthusiasts are eager to see Canelo take on David Benavidez, someone who matches his weight class. In recent comments, Canelo highlighted his physical readiness, indicating his recovery from past injuries and his current 100% fitness level. Canelo was clear about not compromising on the weight class against Crawford, suggesting that such a win wouldn’t earn him due credit.

For Crawford, a compelling matchup could be against Jaron “Boots” Ennis, a contest that promises genuine competition without any complications. Meanwhile, Canelo keeps his options open, hinting at the possibility of facing the victor of the David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade fight.
