The idea of facing Terence Crawford initially seemed like a fleeting fantasy for Canelo Alvarez. While the allure of squaring off against a fighter of Crawford’s caliber was tempting, the weight class difference posed a significant barrier. Crawford, a dominant force at 147 pounds, fights three weight classes below Alvarez. However, Crawford’s recent expressions of interest in moving up to the super middleweight division have reignited the conversation.
Alvarez, reflecting on Crawford’s recent victory over Errol Spence Jr., acknowledged Crawford's prowess but also pointed out a perceived lack of notable opponents on Crawford’s resume. This observation didn’t sit well with Team Crawford, especially Bernie Davis, known as Bernie Tha Boxer. Davis countered Alvarez’s critique by questioning the strength of Alvarez’s own fighting history, highlighting Gennadiy Golovkin (GGG) as the only significant opponent Alvarez has faced, with their three encounters resulting in two wins for Alvarez and one draw.
While Davis could have continued to publicly criticize Alvarez, especially with Alvarez’s upcoming bout against Jermell Charlo, he chose to remain diplomatic. He believes that public confrontations won’t necessarily expedite any potential fight negotiations. Despite the challenges of making such a bout happen, Davis remains optimistic about Crawford’s chances, stating, “I think it’s a helluva fight. I think we can outbox that guy.”
