The British Boxing Board of Control is considering introducing a new men’s light cruiserweight division with a 185lb limit.

The proposed weight class would sit between light heavyweight at 175lbs and cruiserweight at 200lbs, reducing the current 25lb gap - the largest between any two divisions in boxing.

BBBofC General Secretary Robert W. Smith recently contacted license holders to seek their opinions on the proposal, which remains at an early stage.

Smith said the change is being considered partly because modern athletes are generally larger and stronger, with the Board viewing the additional division as a potential health and safety measure.

Other organizations have previously attempted to create new weight classes around boxing’s heavier divisions. The WBC introduced bridgerweight at 224lbs, while the WBA briefly recognized the same limit as super cruiserweight before discontinuing the division.
