Brian Norman Jr. has confirmed that his father will no longer serve as his head traine, as speaking during a recent interview on Cigar Talk’s YouTube channel, the former WBO welterweight champion explained that he is exploring new training options following his recent loss.

The decision follows Norman Jr.’s defeat to Devin Haney on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Entering the bout, Norman and his team were confident he could score a knockout, but the fight took a sharp turn in the second round when Haney dropped him with a clean combination. Although Norman beat the count, Haney’s experience and control carried him to a close but clear unanimous decision.

That loss cost Norman Jr. his WBO welterweight title and prompted a period of reflection. Now 28-1 (22 KOs, 1 NC), the 25-year-old says he is focused on getting back on track, even if it means stepping outside the only coaching setup he has ever known.

Despite the change, Norman Jr. was careful to stress his appreciation for his father’s role in his development. He credited him for guiding him to the world level and said that influence will remain part of his foundation, even without the official head-trainer designation.

As for what comes next, Norman Jr. is taking his time. Ranked No. 2 at welterweight by The Ring, he has yet to decide on a return date, insisting that choosing the right trainer is the priority as he looks to regroup and push his career to the next level.
