Dmitry Bivol could be forced to relinquish a world title if he proceeds with his preferred 2026 schedule rather than meeting mandatory obligations.

Bivol has not fought since his February 2025 win over Artur Beterbiev and is preparing to return following back surgery and has already targeted a defense against IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert. At the same time, he has expressed interest in major fights, including a trilogy with Beterbiev, a clash with David Benavidez, and even a rematch with Saul Alvarez.

However, those plans may conflict with sanctioning body requirements. The World Boxing Organization is expected to order Bivol to face the winner of the interim title fight between Callum Smith and David Morrell, adding another mandatory defense to his schedule.

That creates a difficult situation, as Bivol currently holds the WBA, IBF and WBO titles after previously vacating the WBC belt rather than face Benavidez. Choosing high-profile fights over mandatories could once again cost him a title, while complying with all obligations may delay the marquee matchups fans are expecting.
