Billy Joe Saunders has not ruled out a return to boxing, but admits he would need to fully commit to training before making any serious comeback.
The former two-division world champion has not fought since May 2021, when he was stopped by Canelo Alvarez in the eighth round and lost his WBO super middleweight title. Saunders is now 36 and has been out of the ring for five years.
Saunders had some of his best nights at middleweight, where he beat Chris Eubank Jr in 2014 before defeating Andy Lee to win the WBO title in 2015. His standout performance came against David Lemieux in 2017, when he produced a dominant decision win away from home.
Speaking with The Stomping Ground, Saunders said boxing still pulls him back mentally, but the reality of training is the difficult part.
“I’m always dragged back into it one way or another,” Saunders said. “It’s a game that you miss.”
He admitted that thinking about a comeback and actually living like a fighter are two very different things.
“I would love to,” Saunders said. “Am I good enough now, at 36? We don’t know. If I lost the weight and came out like an absolute stallion, a return could be on the cards.”
