David Benavidez has already set his sights on a future showdown with Dmitry Bivol - but first, he must navigate a major test against Gilberto Ramirez for the unified cruiserweight titles.
Benavidez, currently the WBC light heavyweight champion, is moving up to cruiserweight in pursuit of another title, taking on Ramirez in what will be the champion’s 50th professional fight.
Looking beyond the immediate challenge, Benavidez made it clear that a bout with Bivol is firmly in his plans. The Russian remains the only man to defeat Ramirez and currently holds a leading position in the light heavyweight division. Benavidez indicated that he intends to return to 175 pounds after his cruiserweight campaign to pursue that fight.
Speaking about Bivol, Benavidez acknowledged his opponent’s quality but expressed confidence in his own ability, stating that he expects to take all the belts if they meet. He also referenced their past sparring experience, suggesting both fighters are fully aware of what the matchup would entail.
Before any potential clash can materialize, both fighters have business to handle. Benavidez faces Ramirez in the coming days, while Bivol is scheduled to defend his titles against Michael Eifert on May 23. Outcomes in those bouts will determine whether one of boxing’s most anticipated matchups moves closer to reality.
