British junior welterweight prospect Adam Azim has big plans in store for his next fight, targeting former world champions Regis Prograis and Richard Commey for a June date. The 23-year-old, guided by Boxxer and trainer/manager Shane McGuigan, impressed fans by stopping veteran Sergey Lipinets in nine rounds back in February.
Prograis, 36, lost his WBC 140lb title to Devin Haney in 2023 and later dropped a decision to Jack Catterall. Meanwhile, Commey, 38, was once the IBF champion at lightweight before falling to Teofimo Lopez in 2019. Azim sees either name as a logical step to continue building his reputation beyond the UK.
Though Azim is coming off an award from the British Board of Control for young fighter of the year, he hasn’t shied away from calling out domestic rival Dalton Smith, whose recent competition he deems less challenging. Azim is fresh off that attention-grabbing stoppage of Lipinets, which he argues shows he’s facing (and beating) higher-level foes than Smith. If Azim’s plan to face a former champion in June unfolds, it could push him further toward the front of the junior welterweight pack, setting up even more eye-catching bouts down the line.
