Amir Khan suggested Floyd Mayweather Jr. is on the brink of bankruptcy with an assertion Khan calls “sad,” yet also “karma.” He claims Mayweather’s lavish spending, coupled with controversial displays of wealth, has caught up to him. However, Khan’s stronger point of contention appears to be Mayweather’s support for Israel during ongoing regional conflicts, which Khan says cost Mayweather a portion of his global fan base.
Khan spoke to a variety of media, and offered no direct evidence of Mayweather’s rumored money woes, yet went on to reiterate rumors that “government people” told him Mayweather had been arrested in Dubai over unpaid debts, which remains unverified. Much of Khan’s criticism was directed at what he perceives as Mayweather’s opportunism, from alleged foreign payoffs to flaunting cash in ways that, as Khan puts it, undermine fighters who invest their earnings more responsibly.
The former world champ also touched on his 2016 fight with Canelo Alvarez, revealing that U.S. President Donald Trump declined an invitation to attend the bout in Las Vegas. Khan says the hope was to welcome Trump, who was then on the campaign trail with hardline immigration stances. Khan contends such gestures sometimes shape how political figures or celebrities engage with boxing events.
Additionally, Khan confirmed he nearly joined promoter Turki Al Sheikh and Dana White in a new, high-budget boxing league, a venture he believes will “change the sport in a big way.”
