Boxing history will be made on December 20 when the WBC Boxing Grand Prix Finals take center stage, marking the first tournament-style championship of its kind in professional boxing. Organized by the World Boxing Council and supported by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Sports, the General Entertainment Authority, and Turki Alalshikh, the event concludes an eight-month competition featuring more than 120 fighters from over 40 countries.
The Grand Prix has unfolded through four knockout stages and introduced unprecedented technological innovation to the sport. According to WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, the eight finalists will earn far more than over $200,000 in prize money and the José Sulaimán Trophy, known as the “Flame of Hope.” Each finalist will also receive a WBC ranking, an opportunity to fight for a Silver Title, and increased exposure that could lead to major promotional opportunities.
At the core of the tournament is a new format designed to reshape boxing’s traditional structure. The Grand Prix features single-elimination bouts, an open scoring system with instant replay, and the WBC Enhanced Scoring System, which provides qualitative round-by-round assessments. Five judges are used in the advanced stages to minimize controversy, setting a new benchmark for transparency in the sport.
The finals will crown champions across four divisions. In the featherweight final, unbeaten Muhamet Qamili faces Mexico’s explosive Brandon Mejía. The super lightweight final pits Colombia’s power puncher Carlos Utria against Uzbekistan’s disciplined technician Mujibillo Tursunov. At middleweight, Australia’s Dylan Biggs meets Canada’s precise and adaptable Derek Pomerleau, while the heavyweight final features Argentina’s Kevin Ramírez against Bosnia and Herzegovina’s towering technician Ahmed Krnjić.
The December 20 Finals represent the culmination of a tournament already hailed as a landmark achievement. With four titles on the line and eight finalists chasing a shared dream, the WBC Boxing Grand Prix is set to usher in a new era, introduce fresh global stars, and fulfill a vision decades in the making.
