Megan Redstall (7-0-1, 1 KO) and Maiseyrose Courtney (9-1, 0 KOs) finally meet on July 12, and the WBO International flyweight title fight could open the door to a much bigger domestic scene at 112lbs. The bout was originally set for earlier this year, but Courtney’s hand injury delayed it, leaving Redstall to beat late replacement Consolata Musanga for the vacant Commonwealth bantamweight title.
Now the fight returns at a more natural weight for both women, and that makes it even more important. Redstall, still only 24, comes in with momentum and another belt already added to her collection, while Courtney gets the chance to prove herself in a fight that could push her straight into bigger names at flyweight.
The winner will have no shortage of options. European champion Jasmina Zapotoczna looks like the most obvious next step, especially if Courtney wins and gets the chance to chase revenge. Chloe Watson could also come back into the picture if she stays at flyweight, while Nicola Hopewell still holds the IBO belt and may see the Redstall-Courtney winner as the right fight to rebuild after her loss to Shannon Ryan.
