The build-up to Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford will kick off with world championship action, as Anthony Olascuaga puts his WBO flyweight title on the line against Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Camacho Jr. on Thursday, September 11 at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas.
Olascuaga (9-1, 6 KOs), 26, captured the belt in 2024 with a knockout of Riku Kano and has since made two successful defenses, all while campaigning in Japan. This bout marks his first fight in the U.S. since 2022, and the Los Angeles native will aim to showcase his aggressive style on one of boxing’s biggest fight weeks.
Camacho (19-1, 8 KOs), from Ponce, Puerto Rico, is the WBO’s top-ranked challenger and enters with momentum as he targets his first world title. The 27-year-old brings a solid résumé, also ranked No. 13 by the IBF and No. 12 with the WBC, and sees Olascuaga as his breakthrough opportunity.
The title fight headlines the launch of Ring Magazine’s new series, “The Underdog,” designed to highlight rising contenders and high-risk, high-reward matchups. The supporting card features unbeaten southpaw Justin Viloria (9-0, 7 KOs) against Joshafat Ortiz (13-1, 6 KOs) at junior lightweight, and a junior middleweight clash between Jalil Hackett (9-1, 7 KOs) and unbeaten Elijah Vines (8-0, 7 KOs).
Also in action is U.S. amateur standout Jamar Talley (3-0, 3 KOs), facing seasoned puncher Isaiah Thompson (11-4-2, 10 KOs), while junior featherweights Emiliano Alvarado (8-0, 5 KOs) and Juan Garcia (7-0, 2 KOs) collide in a battle of unbeaten prospects.
With Olascuaga defending his crown and a lineup of rising talents filling the bill, the event sets the stage for one of the sport’s most anticipated weekends of the year.
