David Nyika (9-0, 8 KOs) is going to square off with Western Pennsylvania’s Tommy Karpency (31-8-1, 19 KOs) at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland, New Zealand.
Previously, Blake Caparello was pulled from the match after testing positive for elevated testosterone levels. Nyika and Karpency will now headline the September 14 DAZN show
David Higgins of Duco Events, Nyika’s primary promoter, expressed satisfaction with the replacement. “Securing such a high-quality opponent at short notice is incredibly difficult, so we’re delighted with this result,” said Higgins. He added that Karpency is considered a step up from Caparello by both the sanctioning bodies and DAZN, making this fight an even greater challenge for Nyika.
Nyika, who has stopped his last six opponents, was last seen defeating unbeaten Michael Seitz on the May 18 undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This upcoming fight marks his first time headlining a DAZN show, a significant milestone for the New Zealand Olympian. Nyika is ready to take on the challenge: “My job is to take out whoever my promoters put in front of me. That’s what I’m going to do.”
Tommy Karpency enters the fight with a mixed record, having gone 2-2 in his last four bouts. His most recent win came in August over Joe Jones in Warren, Ohio. Karpency is no stranger to tough competition, having previously challenged lineal/WBC champ Adonis Stevenson and former WBO titlist Nathan Cleverly. He has also faced knockout losses to Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez and Oleksandr Gvozdyk in non-title fights. Despite his setbacks, Karpency continues to compete at an elite level.
