Ardreal Holmes (17-0, 6 KOs) is set to face Erickson Lubin (25-2, 18 KOs) at the Silver Spurs Casino in Kissimmee, Florida, with an IBF super-welterweight title shot on the line. Though the pair met in the amateurs nearly a decade ago, Holmes says time has changed both fighters, and he believes the expectations on Lubin will outweigh the pressure on his own shoulders.
Both men share a history that includes standout amateur careers. Lubin and Holmes first crossed paths in the finals of the 2013 National Golden Gloves in Salt Lake City, where Lubin prevailed. Now, with the stakes raised, Holmes expects that he’s caught Lubin at a time when the Florida native still carries the weight of being a long-established contender.
“He can’t afford a loss at home,” Holmes said. “So I think it’s all pressure on him to deliver.”
Holmes has quietly constructed an unbeaten record. Yet he’s been aware that a lack of social media buzz sometimes results in talented fighters being overlooked. In his view, the May 10 matchup offers the chance to change that narrative.
“We’ve got a lot of great names at 154 - Terence Crawford, Erickson Lubin, Charles Conwell, Sebastian Fundora - so it’s a stacked division,” Holmes added. “I just need a chance to show who I am on a big stage. I’m putting it all on the line.”
While Lubin remains a top draw at 154, Holmes is confident he can walk away undefeated and in prime position to challenge the IBF’s current champion, Bakhram Murtazaliev. Should he succeed, Holmes expects he’ll no longer be a secret in a division full of hungry contenders.
