John Riel “Quadro Alas” Casimero (33-4, 22 KOs), the reigning WBO Global super bantamweight champion, is set to make his debut in Japan. He will be facing Yukinori Oguni (21-2-2, 8 KOs) at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo.
Casimero’s association with Treasure Boxing Promotions began in February, and this upcoming fight will be his second under their banner. His first fight with them took place in May at the Okada Manila Hotel and Casino in Manila, where he clinched the WBO Global title by defeating Namibian boxer Fillipus Nghitumbwa via unanimous decision.
The 34-year-old Casimero is on a quest to reclaim world champion status after losing his WBO world bantamweight title in 2022 due to a violation of the British Boxing Board of Control's ban on sauna use for weight reduction. This violation prevented him from defending his title against British boxer Paul Butler. Despite this setback, Casimero secured two significant victories, including his recent win over Nghitumbwa. However, his victory against Japanese boxer Ryo Akaho in South Korea in December 2022 was marred by controversy. Initially disqualified for an alleged illegal hit, the Korean Boxing Member Commission later ruled it a knockout win for Casimero.
On the other hand, Yukinori Oguni, a former IBF world super bantamweight champion, is gearing up for the match with a commendable record. The fight card will also feature boxers Jeo Santisima, Vince Paras, and Froilan Saludar, who are set to compete against rising Japanese talents.
