Biography
Trevor McCumby is an American professional boxer, born on September 22, 1992, in Yorkville, Illinois. Raised in a disciplined household, McCumby was introduced to boxing at the age of seven by his father, a former Marine and police officer. This early start led to a successful amateur career, during which he compiled a record of 127 wins and 11 losses.
He turned professional at 18, making his debut on October 28, 2010, with a third-round knockout of Sharieff Hayes. He remained undefeated until 2016, when a win over Donovan George was overturned due to a positive test for banned substances, resulting in an 18-month suspension. After a hiatus that included recovery from a knee injury, he returned to the ring in 2023, earning victories over Vicente Martin Rodriguez and Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez. In January 2024, he won a unanimous decision over Christopher Pearson. His first professional defeat was a ninth-round TKO loss to former IBF champion Caleb Plant in September 2024, but marking the pages of history with a legendary fight.
McCumby is married to Kenzie McCumby, whom he wed in March 2022. He has a strong sense of patriotism and is committed to American values. Coming from a small-town community, McCumby carries those values into every fight and throughout his personal life. He consistently expresses support for military personnel, first responders, and working-class Americans, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who serve the nation.
Technical Overview
Raised by a Marine and police officer, his mindset reflects structure, accountability, and a desire to reclaim his position in the sport after a long layoff and suspension. His approach is not about volume or flair—it’s about forcing his opponent into mistakes and heavy counters. Trained by Brandon Woods, a protégé of Hall of Fame coach Kenny Adams, McCumby applies a system that blends traditional American fundamentals with a high-guard structure designed to absorb and retaliate.
He uses a compact guard to walk opponents down without leaning forward. Instead, he keeps a strong, upright back, shoulders squared, and hips slightly angled. His guard is active, pressing inward to bait attacks, then releasing pressure with small steps back to create false openings.
This “in with the guard, out with the guard” makes McCumby psychologically, McCumby behaves like a predator waiting in tall grass. His stance mimics a tiger—back strong, body coiled, eyes patient. If you break form or lunge in, he swats you down with a short counter or a fast left hook. His combinations often start off touch shots - a jab, a tap guard entry - followed by hard, clean shots off angles. A common sequence is the double jab, rear uppercut to the body, followed by a left hook upstairs. He also works off the shoulder roll with short right hands and digs with hooks in close when he’s pressed.
McCumby’s sparring experience with fighters like David Benavidez has sharpened his timing and defensive judgment, especially against fellow American punchers. His style is engineered to withstand pressure while returning it in phases.
