John Hedges

John Hedges is an English cruiserweight from Takeley, Essex, who has steadily grown into his natural division after beginning his professional career much lighter. A highly accomplished amateur, Hedges won four national and seven international titles before turning professional with Matchroom in 2020. A tall southpaw with a relaxed style and fast hands, he has always had the physical tools to stand out, but his move to cruiserweight has allowed him to fight with much more freedom.

The transition was not completely straightforward. A persistent hand injury eventually forced Hedges to undergo surgery and kept him out of the ring for around 10 months. Rather than rushing back, he used the layoff to add size and prepare properly for life at 200 pounds. His return against Erdogan Kadrija in February 2024 was exactly the kind of statement he needed, as Hedges dropped him with a beautifully timed left hook and showed that his speed and power had carried up with him.

Hedges then began making his mark in the domestic cruiserweight scene. He won the Southern Area title against previously unbeaten Lewis Oakford in July 2024, with the fight stopped after six rounds because of an accidental cut. In May 2025, he added the English title with a wide unanimous decision over Nathan Quarless, showing that he could win a hard-fought championship bout without relying on his power alone.

Since moving to Ricky Hatton’s camp, Hedges has continued to develop as one of Britain’s more intriguing young cruiserweights. He is a rangy southpaw who likes to use his height, jab and quick hands while staying composed at long range, but there is enough power in his left hand to change a fight instantly. His biggest challenge now is proving that his athletic style and natural size can translate against the best fighters in a very competitive cruiserweight division.
