Galal Yafai’s world title fight against unified flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval has been postponed after the Birmingham fighter suffered an injury in training.
The bout was due to headline the June 6 card at Utilita Arena in Sheffield, but the show has now lost its main event for the second time. Dalton Smith had already withdrawn from his planned WBC light welterweight title defense against Alberto Puello through injury.
Yafai, 33, has not fought since last June, when his defeat to Francisco Rodriguez Jr. was later changed to a no-contest after Rodriguez failed a drugs test. The Olympic gold medalist remains unbeaten as a professional, with seven stoppages from his nine wins.
The Sheffield event will still go ahead, with Josh Padley’s European super featherweight title defense against Aqib Fiaz now promoted to the main event. The undercard will also feature teenage heavyweight Leo Atang fighting in Yorkshire, along with unbeaten prospects Adam Maca and Connor Mitchell.
