Xander Zayas could be making his final appearance at junior middleweight when he faces Jaron “Boots” Ennis on Saturday night in Brooklyn.
Veteran boxing insider Rick Glaser reported that Zayas has already decided to move up to 160lbs after defending his WBO and WBA super welterweight titles against Ennis at Barclays Center.
“From a very reliable source, this will be Xander Zayas’ last fight at 154, no matter the result Saturday night vs. Boots Ennis,” Glaser posted. “Xander is on his way to 160 and the middleweight division. This decision was made a while ago.”
Zayas became one of the youngest unified champions in boxing after capturing the WBO title and then adding the WBA belt at 154lbs. But at 23, his future has long been expected to include a move up as he continues to grow physically.
Before that, he faces the toughest fight of his career against Ennis, who moved up from welterweight and is trying to become a unified champion in a second division.
