Willy Hutchinson exudes confidence as he gears up to take on Joshua Buatsi in a pivotal light heavyweight title clash set for September 21 at Wembley Stadium, part of Riyadh Season’s latest lineup.
The 25 year old from Scotland, fresh off a dominant performance against Craig Richards, is brimming with self assurance and eager to showcase his skills once more. His standout showing against Richards, where he defied the odds, paves the way for this much anticipated showdown with Buatsi, the Olympic bronze medalist and reigning British and Commonwealth champion.

During the initial press conference, Hutchinson ezpressed the same unwavering belief that propelled him to victory over Richards. With his background in winning the 2016 Youth World Championships as an amateur, he feels well equipped to handle the pressure of such a significant event and deliver when it counts. Hutchinson even made a case that his win over Richards was more convincing than Buatsi's victory in their 2022 bout, underscoring his readiness for this crucial test.
Hutchinson's journey to this interim title fight was fast tracked due to a contractual dispute involving Anthony Yarde, who was originally set to face Buatsi. When Yarde missed the WBO's deadline, Hutchinson's promoter wasted no time in positioning him as the challenger. Within a day of Hutchinson defeating Richards, Andy Ayling from Queensberry reached out to the WBO, suggesting Hutchinson for a fight. The WBO promptly approved this request.
Despite facing inactivity in his career, Buatsi decided to go ahead with the match against Hutchinson instead of waiting for Yarde. This choice sets the stage for one of the most significant events in British boxing this year, with the possibility of the winner taking on the victor of the upcoming Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol undisputed light heavyweight title bout.
Promoter Frank Warren expresses confidence in Hutchinson's potential to emerge victorious against Buatsi:
”Both have exceptional amateur backgrounds and experience at top levels. I believe it's Willy's moment to shine now.”
