Stephen Espinoza of Showtime recently revealed that Gervonta “Tank” Davis has expressed interest in getting back into the ring this year. This is intriguing given that Davis, nearing 29, has faced criticism for not having a significant, career-defining win despite a decade in professional boxing. Some boxing enthusiasts speculate that Davis has been shielded from formidable opponents, with a focus on enhancing his win-record.
However, the final call on his return will largely be determined by Davis’s physical readiness. Having faced legal troubles and having been inactive since his fight against Ryan Garcia last April, there are concerns about his physical condition. Potential opponents for his return include Chris Colbert and Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz. While Davis previously defeated Cruz in 2021, Cruz’s recent lackluster performance against Giovanni Cabrera might raise eyebrows if he’s chosen as Davis’s next opponent. Meanwhile, Colbert’s questionable victory against Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela has fans hoping for a rematch.
Espinoza, however, remains non-committal on Davis’s next opponent, suggesting that discussions haven’t progressed significantly. He mentioned the need for a concrete date before diving into opponent negotiations. Should Davis decide on a comeback this year, it would be interesting to see whether he takes on a significant challenge or plays it safe. Given the speculation around his choices so far, boxing fans are eagerly awaiting his next move.
