Trainer Tony Sims has spoken publicly for the first time following Daniel Dubois’ decision to end their short-lived partnership and reunite with longtime coach Don Charles. The move came before Dubois and Sims had even entered the ring together, marking an abrupt conclusion to a pairing that was only recently announced.

Dubois and Charles had previously enjoyed significant success, culminating in Dubois becoming IBF heavyweight champion and knocking out Anthony Joshua in September 2024 in his first title defense. Their relationship, however, unraveled after Dubois’ defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in their undisputed heavyweight clash at Wembley Stadium last July, a period that also drew scrutiny due to reports of a pre-fight party at Dubois’ home.

After leaving Charles, Dubois linked up with Sims, a respected coach who has worked with Joshua and remains the longtime trainer of Conor Benn. That arrangement proved brief. Dubois has now confirmed his return to Charles, prompting Sims to reflect candidly on why the partnership didn’t last.

“I guess me and Daniel just didn’t gel,” Sims told Pro Boxing Fans. “So I think it’s a good move for him to go back to Don. Sometimes a certain coach is made for a certain fighter.” Sims’ comments framed the split as a matter of compatibility rather than conflict.

Dubois is expected to return to the ring in early 2026, with Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang among the names being discussed as a possible opponent. With Charles back in his corner, the focus now shifts to rebuilding momentum and crafting the strategy for the next phase of Dubois’ career.
