Terence Crawford has revealed that he once “almost died” while cutting weight to make the 135-pound lightweight limit.
Speaking on the DH12 Above the Rim podcast, Crawford explained that moving up in weight can benefit fighters who have spent years draining themselves to compete in lower divisions.
“If you don’t have to cut so much weight, you can get more out of training, you can get more out of eating, your nutrition, your recovery,” Crawford said.
Asked about extreme measures he had taken to make weight, Crawford replied: “I almost died before.” He confirmed it happened while trying to make 135 pounds but did not specify which fight or explain exactly what occurred.
Crawford’s final lightweight appearance came against Ray Beltran in November 2014, after which he moved up in weight and continued his career across higher divisions.
