Sandor Martin, the WBC No. 1 junior welterweight contender, has taken a significant step in his boxing career by signing a multi-fight co-promotional deal with Top Rank. This new partnership, formed alongside his long-time promoter OPI Since 82, aims to propel the Spaniard towards his first world title shot in the competitive junior welterweight division.
Currently, the division is dominated by two-weight world champion and pound-for-pound standout Devin “The Dream” Haney, who holds the WBC junior welterweight world championship. Martin, confident and ambitious, is not shying away from the challenge. “Devin Haney calls himself ‘The Dream,’ but I am his worst nightmare. I will be the next WBC junior welterweight world champion," declared Martin, showcasing his readiness to take on the top contender, be it in the ring or if Haney moves up in weight class.
The partnership has garnered enthusiasm from both Martin’s existing and new promotional teams. Christian Cherchi of OPI Since 82 highlighted Martin's proven track record against notable fighters like Mikey Garcia and Teofimo Lopez. Bob Arum, Top Rank chairman, also expressed excitement about Martin’s talent and the prospect of helping him secure a world title opportunity.
Martin (42-3, 15 KOs), a former European junior welterweight champion and a professional for 13 years, has made a name for himself with only narrow defeats on points. He gained international attention with his 2021 Upset of the Year victory over Garcia and, despite a split decision loss to Lopez in 2022, Martin has maintained his top contender status with knockout victories in 2023.
