Ryan Garcia believes Devin Haney is a tougher opponent than Gervonta Davis, even as talks begin for a possible Davis-Haney fight at welterweight.
Davis has reportedly moved away from negotiations with Floyd Schofield and could instead return against Haney, who now holds the WBO welterweight title. Haney claimed on social media that Davis’ team had reached out to discuss the fight, though no deal has been announced.
Garcia has shared the ring with both men. He lost to Davis by seventh-round stoppage in 2023 after fighting under a rehydration limit, while his 2024 win over Haney was later changed to a no-contest following failed doping tests.
Speaking on the PBD Podcast, Garcia said the rehydration clause made a major difference against Davis and left him physically weakened.
“Haney actually caught me,” Garcia said. “Gervonta … it wasn’t a hard fight - I was just weak.”
Garcia went even further, saying he believes he would beat Davis more convincingly than he beat Haney. “Devin Haney’s a harder [opponent] than Gervonta,” he said.
A Davis-Haney fight would be one of the biggest possible matchups around 147lbs, but Haney also has a WBO obligation to Keyshawn Davis, who has been ordered as his mandatory challenger.
