Ryan Garcia has backed Vergil Ortiz Jr. to beat Jaron “Boots” Ennis by stoppage if the two American standouts meet at super welterweight.
Ennis strengthened his position at 154lbs on Saturday night with a seventh-round stoppage win over Xander Zayas in New York. The victory made him a unified two-weight champion and gave him the WBA and WBO super welterweight titles.
The result immediately increased calls for Ennis to face Ortiz, a fight that has been discussed for years and previously reached serious negotiations before falling apart.
Garcia gave his view in a since-deleted social media post, making a clear prediction for Ortiz.
“Vergil by stoppage,” Garcia wrote. “Book that fight.”
Ortiz has not fought since stopping Erickson Lubin in the second round last November, and is expected to return later this year. A tune-up fight may come first, but Ennis vs. Ortiz remains one of the biggest possible matchups at 154lbs.
