This incident adds to a turbulent year for Garcia. Earlier in 2024, he secured a surprising victory over then-unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney, despite erratic behavior leading up to the fight. Garcia's victory was overshadowed by him exceeding the 140-pound weight limit and testing positive for the banned substance ostarine in pre-fight drug tests.

The New York State Athletic Commission is now considering whether to suspend and fine Garcia, potentially changing his victory to a no-contest or even a disqualification as requested by Haney's attorney.
Adding to the controversy, Garcia criticized his promoter, Golden Boy, and streaming partner DAZN on Saturday for allegedly not paying his full share from the Haney bout. Haney seemed to confirm Garcia's claims with a post on X. Despite the arrest, TMZ noted that Garcia complied peacefully with law enforcement, although he appeared "seemingly under the influence."
