Former Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, according to his father.

Colon was when he faced Terrel Williams in 2015. During the fight, he repeatedly complained about punches to the back of the head and was dropped twice in the ninth round.

After the round, Colon’s corner mistakenly removed his gloves believing the fight was over. He was subsequently disqualified because he could not continue.

The consequences were far more serious. Colon became ill in the dressing room and was rushed to hospital, where doctors discovered bleeding on the brain and performed emergency surgery.

He spent 221 days in a coma and was never able to return to boxing. Colon then spent the following decade undergoing rehabilitation with his family constantly by his side.
