Nathan Heaney has announced that he will retire from professional boxing after his rematch with Gerome Warburton next month in Birmingham.
The middleweight contest will take place on the undercard of Liam Davies vs. Nathaniel Collins at BP Pulse Live. Heaney will be looking to avenge his points defeat to Warburton, who upset him in Manchester in March.
The 37-year-old admitted that walking away from boxing was an extremely difficult decision after dedicating much of his life to the sport.
“This is all I have ever dreamed of doing,” Heaney said. “To achieve what I always wanted to as a young lad but then to give it up is quite sad.”
Heaney turned professional in 2017 and achieved the biggest success of his career in 2023, when he defeated Denzel Bentley to win the British middleweight title.
The Stoke-on-Trent fighter also paid tribute to the supporters who helped create memorable atmospheres throughout his career. He hopes the Warburton rematch will provide one final celebration before he begins searching for a new role that can replace the passion he found in boxing.
