Abdullah Mason’s first WBO lightweight title defense is being finalized for July 4, with the unbeaten champion expected to face Joe Cordina at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
Mason won the vacant WBO belt in November with an entertaining victory over Sam Noakes, and now looks set to defend it in his hometown. The 22-year-old is widely viewed as one of boxing’s most promising young fighters.
Cordina, 34, will travel from Wales as a former IBF junior lightweight champion now competing at lightweight. He lost his title to Anthony Cacace in May 2024 but has since rebuilt with two wins over Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz and Gabriel Flores Jr.
If finalized, Mason vs. Cordina will give Cleveland a world title fight on July 4, while offering Mason a respected former champion as the first challenger of his WBO lightweight reign.
