Lennox Lewis has questioned whether Anthony Joshua should continue boxing after the former heavyweight champion was dropped twice by Kristian Prenga.
Joshua entered last week’s fight in Jeddah as a heavy favourite and was expected to record a routine victory before a planned showdown with Tyson Fury. Instead, Prenga shocked him with two knockdowns in the opening round.
Joshua recovered and stopped Prenga in the second, but the early trouble left Lewis concerned about how much the 36-year-old has left.
“Does he really belong in the ring right now?” Lewis said. “A virtual novice put him on the ground twice in the first round. Is that it? Have we seen the last of him?”
Lewis retired while still heavyweight champion and understands the difficulty fighters face when deciding whether to walk away. His comments suggest Joshua’s comeback victory did little to remove doubts about his current level.
Despite those concerns, Joshua is still expected to face Fury at Madison Square Garden in November after Fury defeated Mariusz Wach one day before Joshua’s fight.
