A major fight for Jaron Ennis is close, and according to promoter Eddie Hearn, it’s now only a matter of days before everything is finalized.
“We were right on the line with Vergil Ortiz Jr.… we were planning media tours, that’s how close we were,” Hearn revealed. But after promotional disputes and legal complications halted those negotiations, attention has shifted, and quickly.
Now, the focus is firmly on a potential showdown with Xander Zayas, the WBA and WBO champion at 154lbs. “There are talks,” Hearn confirmed. “Xander Zayas is right up there… as good a fight as the Ortiz fight was.”
The timing couldn’t be better. With DAZN and Top Rank now aligned, the usual promotional barriers that stall big fights are less of an issue and that’s opened the door for something significant.
For Ennis, it’s been a frustrating wait. Since moving up in weight after beating Eimantas Stanionis, he’s been searching for the kind of fight that defines a division. “He was due to fight in April, May… it’s going to be June now,” Hearn said. “But I guarantee he will be in a big fight next.”
And he didn’t leave much room for doubt: “By the end of next week, we will be pulling the trigger… it’s imminent.”
There are still moving pieces. Josh Kelly is also in the mix, with options ranging from a voluntary defense to jumping straight into another elite matchup.
But the headline is clear: Ennis is about to land a big one.
