Jaron “Boots” Ennis could be heading toward a three-belt junior middleweight unification fight with IBF champion Josh Kelly later this year.
Ennis currently holds the WBA and WBO titles at 154 pounds, while Kelly owns the IBF belt. With both fighters promoted by Matchroom, the matchup would be easier to make than many other unification fights that require negotiations between rival promoters.
Eddie Hearn previously said there was a strong possibility Kelly would face Ennis in November in the United States rather than in Newcastle. Kelly then kept that option alive by defeating Caoimhin Agyarko on July 25.
Kelly would enter as the underdog but brings movement, experience and a style that could force Ennis to work for openings. Ennis, however, would have the advantages in speed, power and offensive variety, meaning Kelly may need the best performance of his career to remain competitive.
