James Toney says Terence Crawford couldn’t compete in his era

Hall of Famer James Toney believes Terence Crawford would not have enjoyed the same level of success if he had competed during Toney’s era.

Crawford retired after becoming undisputed champion at super lightweight, welterweight and super middleweight, with major wins over Julius Indongo, Errol Spence Jr. and Canelo Alvarez.

“No fighter from this era could fight in my era,” Toney said. “I love watching Crawford, David Benavidez, I love watching them fight, but I am being real with you - they could not fight in my era.”

Toney was a three-division world champion during his own career, winning titles at middleweight, super middleweight and cruiserweight while facing fighters including Mike McCallum, Iran Barkley and Michael Nunn.
