Jamaine Ortiz believes Xander Zayas is being underestimated ahead of his June 27 fight with Jaron “Boots” Ennis, and he is picking Zayas to pull off the upset.
Ortiz has spent time around Zayas’ camp in Florida and says the WBA and WBO junior middleweight champion has the work ethic, coaching and fundamentals to make the fight much closer than many expect. “I’m favoring Xander 100%,” Ortiz said. “I think he’s going to be able to pull it off.”
Having also faced Ennis in the amateurs, Ortiz respects Boots’ skill but believes fans are being drawn too much to the flashier parts of his style. “They’re putting more weight on the flashiness than the actual efficiency of Xander,” he said.
Ortiz also dismissed the idea that Ennis will stop Zayas. “There’s no way. I don’t think that’s going to end in knockout,” he said. “Boots ain’t knocking Xander out. I’ll tell you that right now.”
