Martin Bakole and Zhilei Zhang are reportedly set for an IBF-ordered heavyweight final eliminator. This matchup promises to be a slugfest between two heavy hitters with knockout power that brings back memories of legends like George Foreman.
Bakole, who’s enjoyed a solid 10-year career, faces a new challenge in Zhang. While Bakole has been on a 10-fight winning streak since his 2018 loss to Michael Hunter, he’s yet to face an opponent with the kind of devastating power that Zhang brings. The Chinese southpaw, known as "Big Bang," is a counter-puncher who can end a fight with either hand. Bakole’s last opponent, Jared Anderson, was overwhelmed, but Zhang is a far more seasoned and dangerous foe.
Zhang, at 41, is coming off a stunning fifth-round knockout victory over Deontay Wilder earlier this year in Riyadh. That performance showcased Zhang’s power, but his stamina remains a big question mark. Earlier in 2024, he struggled against Joseph Parker, losing a majority decision despite knocking Parker down twice. Zhang's gas tank visibly ran dry after the third round, which could be a vulnerability Bakole looks to exploit.
Bakole will need to be cautious if he wants to survive Zhang’s early onslaught. While the Chinese powerhouse has the ability to take punches and keep coming forward, his past fights have shown that if an opponent can weather the storm, Zhang's stamina can falter. This fight will test Bakole’s resilience against a knockout artist who has tasted victory over some of the division’s biggest names.
