Edgar Berlanga’s trainer, Marc Farrait, believes that preparing for a fight against Canelo Alvarez requires studying more than just his recent bouts. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of reviewing Canelo's entire career, as the seasoned fighter is known for his ability to adapt and bring something different to each match. "You’ve got to look at all of them," Farrait told YSM Sports Media, explaining that focusing solely on Canelo's last three fights would be a mistake because "you don’t know what he’s going to bring."
Canelo's last three victories include unanimous decision wins against John Ryder in May 2023, Jermell Charlo in September 2023, and Jaime Munguia in May 2024. But Farrait warns that Canelo could fight differently in his upcoming bout. "He’s a great fighter. He’s a legend. You can prepare for the way he fought Charlo, the way he fought Munguia, and then he’ll give you something totally different," Farrait said. "You just gotta be ready for any surprises."
Watch off the cuff with Edgar Berlanga: Watch
Farrait has been meticulously reviewing Canelo’s body of work, including his fights against top-level opponents such as Gennady Golovkin and Floyd Mayweather. Canelo, now 34, has had a long and illustrious career, fighting at a world-title level since 2011 and dominating the super middleweight division from 2020 to 2021. Berlanga, by contrast, is relatively inexperienced with just 22 pro fights under his belt.
Despite the disparity in experience, Berlanga and Farrait are confident in their strategy. The pair reunited in 2023 after a brief separation, and Berlanga is counting on his jab to set up power punches. “We have to minimize our mistakes,” Berlanga said in a recent interview with Barstool Sports’ Michael McCarthy. "We have to limit those open doors and keep them shut," highlighting the need for careful precision and defense against Canelo’s counterpunching ability.
