Gervonta Davis has been moved to Champion in Recess by the WBA. The sanctioning body also confirmed that Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi have been ordered to fight for the vacant WBA lightweight championship.
The move closes a confusing title saga. Davis was first expected to become full WBA lightweight champion after Devin Haney vacated the belt in late 2023, but he made clear at the time that he did not want to inherit the title without winning it in the ring.
In January, WBA president Gilberto Mendoza said Davis had been placed into Champion in Recess status because of legal issues and inactivity. But only months later, the organization again referred to him as the reigning champion and ordered a mandatory defense against Schofield.
That fight never materialized, and the WBA has now returned Davis to Champion in Recess status while moving forward with Schofield vs. Bahdi for the vacant title.
The decision may not change Davis’ immediate plans. The unbeaten Baltimore star has been linked to bigger fights outside the lightweight division, including a possible matchup with Devin Haney.
