Steven Nelson, longtime friend and sparring partner of Terence Crawford, has been acquitted of all charges stemming from a 2024 shooting in Omaha, Nebraska.
Nelson had faced five felony charges, including assault and firearm-related counts, after police alleged he fired shots while attempting to recover a vehicle that had been stolen from him. A 14-year-old girl inside the vehicle was injured.
According to the Omaha World-Herald, Nelson testified that he acted in self-defense. More than two years after the incident, he was found not guilty on all charges.
“I was charged with five felonies with the minimum of eight years, maximum of 160 years of hard jail time,” Nelson said following the verdict.
Nelson said the case had weighed on him for two and a half years and thanked his lawyer, family and friends for supporting him throughout the process.
The Omaha boxer has long trained alongside Crawford and previously served as one of his primary sparring partners.
