Liam Smith (33-3-1, 20 KOs) firmly believes he’s on course for a thrilling rematch with Chris Eubank Jr (32-3, 23 KOs). In a stunning upset back in January of 2023, Liverpool’s Smith defied expectations by knocking out Eubank, the heavy favorite, in the fourth round of their middleweight clash at Manchester’s AO Arena.
Initially, Eubank was scheduled to face Conor Benn in a 157-pound catchweight grudge fight in October. However, the bout was canceled when Benn tested positive twice (in separate tests) for the performance-enhancing drug clomifene. This turn of events led to the fateful matchup between Eubank and Smith.
Following his defeat, Eubank activated his rematch clause, sparking rumors that he might also revisit negotiations with Benn for a fight on June 3 in Abu Dhabi. Benn is currently unable to legally box in his native England due to an ongoing investigation by the British Boxing Board of Control regarding his positive drug tests. Benn has reportedly refused to cooperate with the Board.
Yet, according to Smith, Eubank now seems to have his sights set on their much-anticipated rematch. As the boxing world eagerly awaits confirmation, excitement builds for another explosive showdown between these two formidable fighters.
