Emiliano Vargas says he is ready to challenge WBO super lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson after rising to No. 1 in the organization’s rankings.

Vargas, 22, is coming off a fourth-round stoppage of Bryce Mills in June and believes the time has come to fight for a world title.

“I’m a fighter. I’d want to fight him tomorrow,” Vargas said. “I think it’s the time for me to fight for a world title.”

Vargas also pointed to recent sparring with Teofimo Lopez and previous work with Jorge Linares as experiences that have strengthened his confidence.

However, Vargas has yet to defeat an established world-level contender at 140 pounds. Ernesto Mercado has publicly called for a fight with him and could represent another option before a potential Stevenson challenge.
