Promoter Eddie Hearn announced on Thursday that WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol remains a prospective contender for Canelo Alvarez’s fight in September. The terms for a potential rematch are yet to be settled, with Bivol yet to accept what’s been offered.
Bivol is currently Canelo’s top pick for his next fight, despite the emergence of Jermall Charlo and Badou Jack as alternative options. This suggests a strategic move by Canelo, keeping Bivol in suspense while setting him as the primary target for September.
However, Bivol and his manager, Vadim Kornilov, are unhappy with Canelo’s offer mirroring their previous agreement from their fight last year, which Bivol won. They demand a revised deal if a rematch is to occur. Jermall Charlo’s name was also suggested this week as a viable contender for Canelo’s upcoming fight. Nonetheless, the unbeaten Charlo has agreed to fight Demetrius Andrade in October.
While ongoing discussions continue with Bivol, Hearn indicated that the financial aspects remain a key challenge to finalize the fight. With Canelo also having other alternatives on the table, it remains to be seen who will ultimately face off against him in the ring come September.
