Promoter Eddie Hearn has hinted at the possibility of Dmitry Bivol featuring on the undercard of the Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis fight scheduled for December 9th on DAZN PPV. This move could boost the buy rate, considering Bivol’s rising popularity in the U.S. after his win over Canelo Alvarez. However, Hearn remains uncertain if Bivol will agree to the proposed date, as top contenders in the WBA’s 175-lb division have been hesitant to face him.
Having Bivol on the undercard might be seen as a demotion for the WBA light heavyweight champion, especially after headlining fights against notable opponents like Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez and Canelo Alvarez. Hearn did not specify alternative plans for Bivol if he declines the undercard slot. Bivol’s return to the ring is anticipated, given that he hasn’t fought since the previous November due to a hand injury.
Bivol had expressed interest in a rematch with Canelo, but the latter seems to have other plans. Canelo's reluctance to face Bivol again suggests he might be wary of the outcome. Eddie Hearn mentioned ongoing discussions with DAZN about Bivol’s potential fight on the Haney show.
Financial considerations might pose a challenge for DAZN in adding Bivol to the December 9th card, especially with Haney’s expected substantial purse. Despite Bivol’s undeniable talent, Haney, being American, has a more recognizable name.
Chris Algieri and Paulie Malignaggi both acknowledged Bivol’s exceptional skills, with Algieri recalling the skepticism surrounding Bivol’s chances against Canelo. Malignaggi pointed out the challenges Bivol faces in securing big fights, given his formidable reputation and the perceived lack of financial incentive for potential opponents. Malignaggi also touched upon the political implications of Bivol’s Russian origin, which might be affecting his marketability.
