David Papot believes his unanimous decision victory over Harlem Eubank proved he belongs at world level and earned him a championship opportunity.
The French welterweight dropped Eubank in the second round and twice more in the tenth at London’s Copper Box Arena. Although Papot was floored in the seventh, he controlled enough of the contest to secure the biggest win of his career.
“I’m immensely proud to have beaten Harlem,” Papot said. “I needed to make a statement, and I think I’ve earned a shot at a world title.”
Papot admitted his reputation for limited punching power may have worked in his favour. “My record doesn’t reflect my punching power,” he said. “That works to my advantage.”
The 35-year-old is also open to facing Eubank again if the financial terms are attractive, but his main objective is a first world title fight.
“I believe I’m at the same level as the current champions,” Papot said. “Winning the title is a childhood dream of mine.”
