Jermall Charlo has been ruled out of his scheduled WBA super middleweight title challenge against Armando Resendiz, with Jaime Munguia stepping in as his replacement for the May 2 bout in Las Vegas. The change comes just hours after Charlo was initially confirmed for the fight, with his withdrawal attributed to undisclosed reasons.

The contest will remain part of the PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video at T-Mobile Arena, serving as the co-main event to Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez’s unified cruiserweight title defense against David Benavidez. Munguia, a former junior middleweight world champion, now receives the opportunity that had previously slipped away when earlier talks for a fight with Resendiz fell through.

Resendiz will be making the first defense of the WBA title he inherited after defeating Caleb Plant for the interim belt last May and later being elevated to full champion following Terence Crawford’s retirement. The 27-year-old had already disrupted plans for a Charlo-Plant clash with that upset victory.

Munguia enters with a record of 45-2 (35 KOs) and has not fought since May 2025, when he earned a unanimous decision win over Bruno Surace. That result was briefly clouded by a positive test for a banned substance, though it was later ruled a false positive.
