Canelo Alvarez is set to return to the ring in September, targeting a super middleweight world title shot as he looks to bounce back from his most recent defeat and reestablish himself at the top of the division.

The Mexican star has not fought since losing his undisputed 168-pound crown to Terence Crawford in September 2025. Following that loss, Alvarez underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow in October, requiring up to 15 weeks of recovery and forcing him to skip his traditional May fight date.

Now, his comeback plans are clear. Alvarez is scheduled to challenge Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of a “Mexico vs. the world” card promoted by Turki Alalshikh.

Mbilli earned his position after stopping Maciej Sulęcki in the opening round to claim the interim belt before fighting to a draw with Lester Martinez. He was later elevated to full champion after Crawford vacated the titles following his retirement.

For Alvarez, the fight presents a chance to become a two-time super middleweight champion.
