Canelo Alvarez has given his view on the expected Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn fight, calling it a strong matchup and praising both fighters.
Garcia is expected to defend his WBC welterweight title against Benn in Las Vegas in September after winning the belt with a dominant unanimous decision over Barrios, dropping him in the opening round and controlling the fight. Benn would be challenging for world honours for the first time, following his two-fight rivalry with Chris Eubank Jr. and a win over Regis Prograis at a 150lb catchweight.
Canelo, who previously trained alongside Garcia before their public fallout and later reconciliation, said he likes the matchup. “It’s a good fight,” Canelo said. “Conor Benn is a good fighter, he throws a lot of punches. He’s very brave. Ryan Garcia is a great fighter too, it’s a good fight.”
The fight as well would be a notable return to the welterweight limit for Benn, who has not competed at 147lbs in more than four years.
