Canelo Alvarez has teamed up with Jaime Munguia in San Diego ahead of their respective battles against William Scull and Bruno Surace. Salvador Rodriguez reported on social media that both Mexican stars are training under Eddy Reynoso’s guidance, sharing a video of the pair working out together. While Canelo is set to face Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 3rd for the undisputed super middleweight championship, Munguia will be looking to avenge his loss to Surace in a rematch later this year.

Canelo holds the WBA, WBC, and WBO 168-pound titles, and aims to unify them with Scull’s IBF belt. Despite reservations about Scull’s marketability, Turki Al-Sheikh chose him as Canelo’s opponent to set up a more lucrative bout with Terence Crawford. Although the Canelo vs. Crawford fight carries historical intrigue, the business side may pale in comparison to a potential clash with Jake Paul, whose massive following often generates bigger pay-per-view numbers.

Munguia’s last 12 months have been turbulent. He suffered his first career defeat via unanimous decision to Canelo in May, only to be knocked out by Surace in December. Nevertheless, he remains determined to bounce back and sees a rematch with Surace as the perfect opportunity to prove he’s still a force at middleweight. With both fighters under one camp, fans and analysts alike are curious how their joint training sessions might benefit Canelo for the Scull matchup, given that Munguia’s style doesn’t exactly mirror Scull’s slick approach.

Still, the decision to train together could help each fighter sharpen their skills, as both are hungry to deliver statement wins.
