A new challenge awaits David Benavidez as he steps up in weight to face unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto Ramirez, as many question whether this is the fight that finally pushes the unbeaten star to his limits.
Set to headline a Prime Video/DAZN pay-per-view at T-Mobile Arena, the bout sees Benavidez making his cruiserweight debut after building his reputation at lower weights.
Speaking on ProBoxTV’s “Boxing Scene Today,” former champions Chris Algieri and Paulie Malignaggi debated the dynamics of the fight. Malignaggi suggested that Ramirez’s success at cruiserweight indicates Benavidez could also carry his power comfortably into the division, while still acknowledging the physical challenges that come with the added weight.
Ramirez enters the fight with proven credentials at 200lbs, having recorded wins over Joe Smith Jr., Arsen Goulamirian, Chris Billam-Smith and Yuniel Dorticos. His only defeat came at light-heavyweight against Dmitry Bivol, but since moving up, he has established himself as a consistent and durable force in the division.
Concerns remain around Benavidez’s adaptation. Algieri wasn't sure whether his trademark hand speed will translate at cruiserweight, while Malignaggi pointed to the possibility of Ramirez’s physicality becoming a factor in the later rounds. Despite this, Benavidez has handled top-level opposition in recent years, including wins over David Morrell and Demetrius Andrade, and has rarely shown signs of struggle since his early career bout with Ronald Gavril.
