Eddie Hearn says he hopes to retain Edgar Berlanga at Matchroom even after the super middleweight contender completes his last contracted fight on March 15 against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in Orlando, Florida. According to Hearn, Berlanga’s in line for more significant matchups if he sticks around – specifically naming Caleb Plant or Jermall Charlo as potential next opponents.

Berlanga, 27, hasn’t loved the idea of being on the undercard for the Austin 'Ammo' Williams vs. Patrice Volny card on DAZN, but Hearn insists a main-event slot in Puerto Rico fell through due to time constraints. Now, Berlanga will fulfill his obligation, after which he’s free to weigh his options.

Some critics note Berlanga might look elsewhere, particularly with Jaime Munguia – a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico clash that appeals to Berlanga given the possibility of earning another lucrative date with Canelo Alvarez, who handed him his only defeat last September. Hearn’s goal, however, is to lock down “The Chosen One” for the rest of his career at Matchroom. Whether Berlanga sees that future in big-name bouts against Plant or Charlo, or if he’s lured by new opportunities (like Turki Alalshikh’s upcoming league), remains to be seen.
